Bavarian beard wax, the really firm-setting kind, is made mainly from fats such as petroleum jelly and beeswax. It also contains gum arabic, which is what makes it so strong. That stiffness is exactly why Bavarian beard wax in a full beard is less suited to the classic look.

Compared with beard wax, a beard balm has one big advantage in a full beard: it doesn't set hard. Your beard hair stays supple and you can still reshape it afterwards with a beard comb. A useful side effect is that it keeps your beard cleanable. Bits of food comb straight out of the hair with a beard brush or a beard comb, easily and naturally.
