Are Aldi Razor Blades Any Good? A Barber's Verdict

The Discounters and Their Shaving Products - Aldi Razor Blades

Discount supermarkets the world over carry about the widest product range any consumer will come across. Everyday groceries, seasonal bargain bins, grooming products: nothing is left off the shelf. And with a range that big, beard care kit was never going to be missing.

But how good are Aldi razor blades, or those of its rivals, really? Can they hold their own against the pricey competition? And what about a proper straight razor? Plenty of questions, and we feel we owe our readers answers, so today's Charlemagne Premium blog post looks specifically at the blades sold by Aldi, the biggest discounter in this part of the world. Enjoy the read.

Aldi razor blades from the southern and northern chains

The Albrecht brothers split the German market into two territories back in the day, and Aldi Süd and Aldi Nord still operate along those lines. That brought with it products that differ from region to region to suit local shoppers, and in other cases simply different product names and manufacturers.

To take one example, the Aldi Süd stores carry razors and replacement blades from the maker "MAN Rasierer". The Aldi Nord stores sell the Ombia Men blades instead. In the end that doesn't matter much, because as a rule these are perfectly usable but far cheaper copies of what the big names, market leader Gillette among them, are selling.

Aldi razor blades in practice - what can they actually do?

This is where we have to bring money into it. Broadly speaking, we found that most of the discounter's basic razors, Aldi's blades included, are simple in build and design. For a man with no beard shaving wet every day, and coming back to the cost side of things, that's a clear win. Getting through cheap blades adds up to less over time than the slower wear you might get from an expensive one.

The cheap option is built to do one job and get a result.

Detailed line work is beyond them, though, and beyond the expensive cartridges from the market leaders too. Anyone whose goal sits in beard grooming is working with something else entirely. The straight razor.

The straight razor and what it does for men with beards

The straight razor, fixed blade or replaceable (there's more on that in the Charlemagne Premium blog, naturally), can be steered with extreme precision, which makes it the tool of choice for keeping beard lines sharp. Unlike the cartridge razors described above, the ones taking Aldi blades included, these are made for a full wet shave and for serious line work.

As you've read, for the right sort of user Aldi's blades are far from the worst choice. If you have to shave daily for work, to name one case, they're a good alternative to the expensive versions from the market leader.

If beard grooming is where your interest lies, though, there's only one answer: the straight razor, and learning to shave properly. If that appeals, any barber worth trusting will talk you through it, in the chair or over email, because:

As barbers with more than 20 years in the trade between us, we went looking for styling & care products that convinced us completely. There were some good products on the market, but none that gave us everything we needed. After some thought, in 2014 we decided to develop our own range. For two years we spent every free minute after work at the barbershop down in our cellar, refining the formulas. When it came to ingredients, only the best was good enough. We bought the finest jojoba oils available in Morocco, and argan oil from Italy.

After two years and a good many attempts, our first product line was ready, and it has been winning our customers over ever since. We think 98% positive reviews speak for themselves. Since the official launch in 2016 we've kept developing it, of course. That's one of the reasons Charlemagne Premium products have won not just one but several comparison tests in recent years.

You'll find all our products right here in our online store. For any questions about them, you can reach us any time at info@charlemagne-premium.com.
