The Boxer Cut - A Timeless Sporty Look
Whether it is the legendary boxer Mike Tyson, German rapper Bushido or plenty of other characters from the male half of the world. They all wear, or once wore, the boxer cut. A combination of athleticism and a shot of masculinity that has never really dated.
But where does this look that turned into a full-blown hype come from? What gives the boxer cut its appeal? And above all, how does it land with women?

What does the boxer cut look like?
In the trade the boxer cut is actually called a flat top. Flat as in flat, top as in the hair on top. So it is a brush cut worn mainly by men. The sides and back are clipped right down, and the remaining hair forms a plane that rises from back to front and up from the sides: the "flat". So much for what looks like a simple cut. Even so, the transition between the lengths is anything but easy to pull off. Here is where we suggest you make a note to self. Nothing, and we mean nothing, ruins a haircut like a bad, messy length transition that was attempted but not mastered.
Where do you see the boxer cut?
The second half of the 1980s in particular is when the boxer cut, the flat top, took hold in youth scenes like hip hop through rappers such as Kool Rock Steady and Kool Eddie. Today the cut is a big deal among the German hip hop crowd. Fler and Bushido, both German rappers, "brought the flat top to Germany".
Beyond the obvious candidates, the boxers themselves, where at professional level the short length keeps the head from overheating during a fight, the cut is also worn across the US armed forces. Plenty of people will remember the film "Full Metal Jacket" at this point...
Styling the flat top, the boxer cut
Styling the boxer cut is easy. The classic version is already made by the cut itself. An unstyled, purpose-built haircut that needs no pomade or anything like it. Let us be honest. No hair product on earth survives a single round in the ring without a comb-through afterwards. So why bother?
Away from the ring, of course, the boxer cut can be pushed to its maximum. That usually means standing the hair up with hair gel or hair wax. A cheeky look, and still a timeless one.
As you have read, the boxer cut is a plainly kept men's haircut. Built for function, it still carries a certain masculinity that tends to land well with women as part of the whole tough-guy thing. It reads as male dominance and it is daily bread for any barber. If you are planning to wear a boxer cut yourself, please do not take it on alone. However easy it looks to do the whole thing with a set of clippers, the eye is in the detail.
