A receding hairline and a classic bald patch on top are not going to give you a genuinely cool look here, because at 6mm the hair is actually too long to disguise the truths handed to you by God and nature. In that case, take the hair on top down a step, and we mean 3mm at most, which is roughly a number 1 guard. That way the thinning areas blend properly into the hair that is still growing. As a rule, the 6mm buzz cut is doable with any standard set of hair clippers. The preset guards that come with the machine almost always include one that sits 6mm off the scalp, which is the number 2 on most guard sets. Work the top and the sides evenly, or the look falls apart. Buzz, done: a military-short scalp has presence. And if you do not own a set of clippers, do what you always do and go to a barber you trust. Tell him you want a 6mm buzz cut, or a number 2 all over, and he will know exactly what to do.
