How to Straighten a Beard: 5 Methods That Work

First thing in the morning in particular, a beard tends to look like it has been through a wind tunnel. Beard oil, pomade, beard wax, or as a last resort a mini straightener: the grooming world has plenty of options to get you where you want to be.

The catch is that the men who have it usually want the one thing they cannot have.

Here are five ways to get your beard styling properly under control and your beard straight.
Blow-drying
You already know how this works from the hair on your head. A good old hairdryer takes wet hair and dries it into a shape, and all you have to do after that is hold it there with the right product.
Blow-drying your beard does much the same thing. With a round brush you can work longer growth into exactly the shape you want. If you have been feeding your beard with something like beard oil for a while, it will be supple enough for the dryer to move it in the right direction. That is beard straightening in its purest form: no extra products, none of the chemistry we tend to complain about.
Brush, brush, and brush again
However you plan to shape your beard, brushing your facial hair is the single most important habit for straightening it. A beard brush also spreads grooming products through the hair far better than your fingers ever will. A genuine win-win. Beard oil: a smoother beard from one product
Beard oil is one of the most widely used and best loved ways to look after a beard. After a treatment with the stuff your beard has a silky shine and feels softer and more pliable.
That comes down to moisture. The hair holds onto it, which relaxes the tension inside each strand. If the kink in your beard is mild to moderate, you have already found your answer right here. If your beard needs something with more muscle, our next tip is where you want to be.
Pomade and beard wax
Like beard oil, pomade puts moisture into your beard hair. As mentioned, that moisture is what makes the hair soft and pliable, which is why pomade also does a decent job of straightening.
Beard wax is a different animal. Moustache wax is built for styling and for holding difficult shapes in place, a curled moustache being the obvious example. It is not a daily conditioning product.
Rather than softening your beard and smoothing it out, that traditional Bavarian-style wax makes the hair stiff. It is a styling product, and it behaves like one.
Borrow from your girlfriend: use a straightener
Not many men think of it, but a hair straightener earns its place on a beard too. What rarely helps is reaching for a full-size one. Those are built around long hairstyles, and the heat plus the size means you can quite easily burn your face. There are better options out there. Straighteners made originally for travel or short hair do an excellent job on a beard.

Before you use one, make sure there are no beard care products in your beard, because they will simply burn off. The one exception is a dedicated heat protectant, which usually shields the hair up to around 225 degrees Celsius and helps it recover afterwards. Bear in mind: all heat dries your hair out. The heat method is the last on our list and it works even on the wildest storybook-bandit beard. Even so, between the heat and the time it takes, keep it as an occasional treatment rather than a daily one.
