Bold and Extroverted? The Punk Haircut

The punk haircut, well, that's a trend with real staying power. It broke through to the wider public mainly in the eighties, and one version of the punk haircut or another has been more or less everywhere ever since. So what keeps this trend going? We'll get into that and a few other things in today's Charlemagne Premium blog post, and bring you a little closer to the legendary punk haircut. Enjoy the read.

Punk and the punk haircut, the short version

Punk hit its peak towards the end of the eighties in particular. The mohawk was everywhere. Crests dyed in eye-catching colours could be admired out on the street. Even so, the punk scene, and with it anyone wearing the haircut, never had much of a reputation. Usually tied to scrounging and to "people who don't work", the punk scene never managed to build itself a properly established footing. Which raises the question of why, when there was nothing wrong with the thing then and there isn't now. Pushing back against the steadily rising tide of feelgood consensus, or to put it another way, questioning capitalism critically, is not wrong in itself. A form of resistance, and at the same time a stand for being equal and for what that's worth. Add punk rock and some excessive parties, and you have a period that simply wrote history.

The mohawk. Cock fights not included.

On a mohawk, meaning the classic punk haircut, the sides of the head are clipped down to a few millimetres (grade 0 to 1). The hair on top, running back towards the nape, is left long and untrimmed. The punk haircut has no rules as such. Whatever was individual was what counted. Colour, or spikes styled into points along the crest. That is exactly what the punk haircut is: varied, and personal to whoever wears it.

Why can't you pin the punk haircut down?

Punk means resistance, when you boil it down. Against the system, against the small-minded, but above all against the mass sameness of our time. Which is exactly why the punk haircut can't be pinned down, beyond the scene-defining mohawk. Shaved sides, a mohawk, or just something completely extroverted. The punk haircut is whatever the mainstream doesn't offer and whatever is different.

As you've read, the punk haircut is anything but run of the mill, and it comes down to taste. These days punk isn't the fashion trend it once was. Watered down versions, more wearable day to day but still built on punk, are still everywhere. On the subject of watering down, all we can tell you is to find your own style. Combining a modified punk haircut with a beard in particular can set trends today. Since we're assuming that's exactly your thing, you should take a look at our Charlemagne Premium blog. That's where you'll find the right styling products for your own punk haircut or the beard to go with it, because:

„A healthy and well groomed beard is important for a real man, that's why we offer everything you need to keep yours doing so.“

As barbers with more than 20 years in the trade between us, we went looking for styling & care products that convinced us 100%. There were some good products on the market, but none that gave us everything we needed. After some thought we decided in 2014 to develop our own range. For two years we used every free minute after work at the barbershop to refine the formulations down in our cellar. When it came to ingredients, only the best was good enough. We bought the finest jojoba oils available in Morocco, and argan oil from Italy.

After two years and a good many attempts our first product line was ready, and it has been winning customers over ever since: we think 98% positive reviews speak for themselves. Since the official launch in 2016 it has of course been developed further, continuously. That is one of the reasons why Charlemagne Premium products have won not one but several comparison tests in recent years.

You will find all our products, of course, right here in our online store. For any questions about them, you can reach us any time at info@charlemagne-premium.com.
