Everything You Need to Know About Beard Trimming Tools

That possibly golden hair catching the summer light, moving in the wind. Is that really all there is to it? Could I get more out of my facial hair by giving it the right cut? Trim the beard myself, or go to the barber I trust? What the hell, a man does it himself, so let's get stuck in, into the beard of course.

There are plenty of ways to trim a beard. Beard scissors, a straight razor, or a classic beard cutter such as an electric beard trimmer. Many roads lead to the same place.

So we have taken up the subject of beard trimming and will try, in today's Charlemagne Premium blog post, to bring it a bit closer to the world of men, because trimming a beard is not a one way street. We'll start you off with the classic pair of scissors, and yes, you guessed right.

Beard scissors

A classic pair of scissors needs no explanation. Beard scissors, on the other hand, have their own set of very real advantages. Small rounded tips and a handy shape mean you can catch even the hairs hiding away on your face and trim the beard properly. One thing to keep in mind is that beard scissors work like fabric scissors: they are meant for beard hair only. The upside is that the blades stay sharp and the tool serves you for years.

Beard scissors

Scissors make particular sense on longer beard hair. Wild hairs that stick out can be trimmed one by one to suit the look.

In our view, beard scissors are a must for every bearded man and every grooming kit.

Now that you have taken your beard, short or long, down to the length you want, it is time to bring the edges into shape.

The beard trimmer

Beard cutters, also called trimmers or simply clippers, use an electric drive to catch several beard hairs at once and trim the beard down.

They do it with a small motor linked through a drive to a blade, which does the cutting, usually against a small comb. The big advantage is catching a lot of hairs at the same time. That gives you more accuracy if you are not a professional, and it saves time as well. Hard to imagine what we bearded men would do without that piece of engineering. Clippers are absolutely unavoidable where beard care is concerned.

Philips and Braun both have good machines on the market, for beginners and professionals alike. If this tool interests you, have a browse through the blog. You will find what you need. But careful: edging up your lines should always be done more precisely than the general trim. Which brings us to our third favourite:

Straight razor

The straight razor

The straight razor has advantages all of its own. Its extremely keen edge can take your beard hair down very short indeed, which makes the trim accurate and clean. We have covered razors with replaceable blades and shave-ready edges several times in the Charlemagne Premium programme. So you do not skip past the subject, read that blog post and bring a bit of professionalism to your beard trimming. Bear in mind, though, that one more piece of kit will be very useful to you here:

Shaving soap

Trimming your beard with a straight razor calls, as mentioned, for one important helper: shaving soap. Whipped up properly, it builds the ideal glide layer on your skin between the skin and the blade. That lets the razor cut the beard hairs off right at the surface. The result is an extremely clean surface which, as we said, makes your lines look especially sharp.

Trimming your beard is, and stays, unavoidable

Three day stubble or a Viking look worn after growing the hair out. Sooner or later the moment comes to trim the beard or cut it back.

A trimmed beard, cut into shape regularly and kept tidy, is the be-all and end-all if you want your facial hair in good order. Call it a basic rule of wearing a beard. Stubborn hairs get brought back to the same length every time you trim.

As you have read, none of this is particularly hard once you have grown the beard hair out and want to trim it properly. For the right care you will find, as always, every tool and product you need in our Charlemagne Premium shop, because your beard needs love too. It will not groom itself.

„A healthy and well groomed beard is important for a real man, that's why we offer everything you need to keep yours doing so.“

Trimming a beard

As barbers with more than 20 years in the trade between us, we went looking for styling & care products that convinced us 100%. There were some good products on the market, but none that gave us everything we needed. After some thought we decided in 2014 to develop our own range. For two years we used every free minute after work at the barbershop to refine the formulations down in our cellar. When it came to ingredients, only the best was good enough. We bought the finest jojoba oils available in Morocco, and argan oil from Italy.

After two years and a good many attempts our first product line was ready, and it has been winning customers over ever since: we think 98% positive reviews speak for themselves. Since the official launch in 2016 it has of course been developed further, continuously. That is one of the reasons Charlemagne Premium products have won not one but several comparison tests in recent years.

You will find all our products, of course, right here in our online store. For any questions about them, you can reach us any time at info@charlemagne-premium.com.
